![]() Take for instance the Druid High Grand Reunion held last weekend for alumni of the school. The alumni from the schools are as tight as any current school in the area. 'When Tuscaloosa was founded, there were black bears here,' Tuscaloosa High School graduate Bill Lawley said.Īnother theory floating about is that the black in the name Black Bears comes from the Choctaw Indian, Tuskaloosa, meaning Black Warrior, for whom the city was named.Īs visible as the Black Bears and Dragons logos still are, one would think the high schools were still open. No one knows for certain how Tuscaloosa came up with the nickname of Black Bears, but one story of the origin is told more than others. Likewise, former Druid students wear the Dragons' emblem with pride around town.
